Riding along the historic Kjolur route

Booking request

Traveling from south to north or vice versa right across the heart of Iceland we find ourselves traversing sandy deserts close to the mighty Langjokull and Hofsjokull Glaciers. Sheltered green valleys come as a surprise in this rugged terrain. Hveravellir is a geothermal area in the highlands where we can soak in a long hot bath under the Midnight Sun. If you want to see as much as possible of the unspoiled Icelandic highlands, this tour, which has been in operation since 1983, is a perfect choice.

Gullfoss waterfall

The ride starts towards the majestic Langjokull glacier, and our first stop is the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall and hot springs area. Today's ride takes us to a mountain called Blafell. There we spend the night in the Fremstaver mountain hut and let the horses rest. (approx. 25 km)

Our riding tour continues along the slopes of the Blafell mountain. This area was once roamed by outlaws. We cross the river Hvita and enjoy the view of the glacier-fed lake Hvitarvatn. Today we spend the night in Arbudir, which lies directly on the banks of the river Svarta. (approx. 34 km)

Hveravellir geothermal area

Today we follow the Fulakvis glacier river and cross the Kjalhraun lava field. We hear the story of the brothers from Skagafjordur who died here in October 1780 while trying to drive a flock of sheep home. The destination of today's riding tour is Hveravellir, a unique geothermal area situated between the Hofsjokull and Langjokull glaciers. The most famous outlaw, Fjalla Eyvindur, survived for years here in this harsh but beautiful natural environment. At the mountain hut, a natural hot pool invites you to take a well-deserved relaxing bath. (approx. 50 km)

Today's route takes us further north along the beautiful River Seydisa. Our horses accompany us as we walk freely along the soft paths of this mystical highland region. We leave the Sandkulufell and Saudafell mountains behind us before reaching our destination. Our well-equipped hut for the night has a hot tub. It is named after Mount Afangafell, from where we have a marvelous view of the large glaciers behind us and the high mountains of the north in front of us. The sun hardly sets in this part of the country until mid-July. (approx. 35 km)

Áfangi – Vatnsdalur Valley – Hvammur Farm

We continue our ride across the Audkuluheidi moor. The valleys with the farms in the north come closer and closer, while our horses run freely over the soft bridleways of the northern highlands. It is impressive to see the fertile valley of Vatnsdalur with all its fields and vegetation. As we ride down into the valley, the gorge of the river Vatnsdalsa appears with some of its many beautiful waterfalls. Our horses stay at the farm Forsaeludalur, which is the first farm in this area when coming from the highlands. We spend the night at the Hvammur guesthouse. We round off the day in the hot pot after today's ride. (approx. 35 km)

Great riding trails along the river Vatnsdalsa give us the opportunity to enjoy a fast ride in the soft tolt! Vatnsdalur is one of the most beautiful valleys in Iceland and the setting for one of the oldest sagas. On our ride to Hvammur, we hear stories from Iceland's heroic past about bloody conflicts, revenge, and love. We say goodbye to our horses, which can rest in the green fields of the valley. We celebrate a successful tour with a big farewell dinner, stories, and songs. (approx. 20 km)
