Westman Islands

Heimaey ©Hermann Helguson

A short ferry ride takes you to the main island of Westman Islands: Heimaey. There you can hike up Eldfell volcano, which erupted in 1973. The lava layer is still warm in some places. We recommend taking a boat trip to the basalt caves and bird cliffs. In the island's museum Eldheimar you can learn about the dramatic eruption in 1973, and about the volcanic activity in Iceland. Overnight in Heimaey.

Reykjadalur – Geysers – Thingvellir National Park – Borgarfjörður

Start the day with a hike on Hengill Mountain, where you can bathe in natural hot springs. Visit the impressive "golden" waterfall Gullfoss, and the famous geysers. At Lake Laugarvatn, you can bathe in the Fontana Bath, which was built on a hot spring, and offers various saunas. At Thingvellir National Park, you can clearly see how the two continental (tectonic) plates, on which Iceland is located on, are drifting apart. The day ends further west in the Borgarfjord area. Stay for 2 nights.

Visit Europe's largest geometric hot water source, Deildartunguhver, which produces 180 litres of boiling water per second! You can even relax in the geothermal baths at Krauma Spa by Deildartunguhver. Near Reykholt, Hraunfossar "lava" waterfalls flow over a length of 900 metre into the Hvita River. Continue onwards through the Hvalfjord tunnel to Reykjavik, where you will drop off your rental car. Overnight in Reykjavik for 2 nights.

Reykjavik – Volcano Excursions (Optional)

Inside a volcano ©Vilhelm Gunnarsson

Day free at your own leisure. We recommend changing your perspective and exploring Iceland from air or underground:

Helicopter tour to Eyjafjallajökull Volcano:

From Reykjavik you fly over the geothermal area Krýsuvík, along the coast to the Thorvaldseyri Farm, which is located directly below Eyjafjallajökull volcano. We continue directly to the 2010 eruption sites, with a view of Thorsmörk valley, and the active volcano Hekla, before returning to Reykjavik.
Price: approximately € 1,085 per person (duration 2,5 hours).

Sightseeing flight "Ice and Fire -  Glaciers and Volcanoes:"

Experience the contrasting natural beauties of South Iceland from a bird's eye view! The flight offers impressive views over the eruption points of Eyjafjallajökull and the surrounding glaciers. You will fly over the famous Hekla Volcano and Thingvellir National Park, the seat of the olderst parliament in the world, as well as the geysers area and the "golden waterfall" Gullfoss. You fly back to Reykjavik over the Thorsmörk valley, and the colorful rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar.
Price: €495 per person (min. 2 people, duration 1,15-1,45 hours).

Inside a volcano, an exceptionally unique experience:

An impressive experience of hiking and going into the inside of the inactive volcano gorge Thrihnukagigur, about 40 minute drive from Reykjavik. An open elevator takes you to the 120m deep, illuminated magma chamber, where you will be overwhelmed by the special colours of the solidified lava. (Hike approximately 50 min. each way over rough terrain, moderate fitness level required).
Price: €336 per person (duration 5-6 hours).
