Arrival in Keflavik airport. The Flybus shuttle brings you from Keflavík International airport to Reykjavik where you spend the first night in Iceland. We provide you with ideas how to explore Iceland‘s capital on your own.
After a hearty breakfast, we met our guide in the hotel lobby, who will accompany us on the tour. We kicked off our adventure with a visit to the impressive Northern Lights Centre Aurora Reykjavik, where we received an introduction to the Northern Lights and some tips on photographing them.
Our next stop was the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, which is equally impressive in winter when the water is frozen. We then visited the geyser area and saw the famous Strokkur geyser shoot a huge fountain of water into the air every few minutes. After this stunning experience, we drove along the coast towards the country's south, making stops at the famous waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss before reaching the black beaches of the south coast.
Dinner and overnight stay will be in the small town of Vik. If the weather conditions are favourable, our guide planned to take us on a northern lights hunt in the evening.
We will have breakfast at the hotel and then head to the impressive Vatnajökull National Park in South Iceland. The park is one of the largest national parks in Western Europe, covering around 13% of Iceland.
We will visit the Skaftafell region, known for its unique nature and majestic glaciers, before travelling to our next destination, the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. At the lagoon, we can enjoy the breathtaking view of the many icebergs floating in the water, and with a bit of luck, we might see a seal taking a nap on one of the ice floes. Next to the glacier lagoon is Breidamerkursandur, better known as Diamond Beach.
Dinner and overnight stay will be in southeast Iceland or the Hofn region.
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we drive through the impressive Almannaskard Pass, where we stop briefly to take some photos. The eastern fjords offer an impressive backdrop of large mountains that end steeply in the sea. On our journey, we have the chance to see reindeer, which migrate from the highlands to the East Fjords in winter.
We pass many small and charming villages until we stop in Breidalsvik and visit the local Beljandi microbrewery for a beer tasting. We then drive to Egilsstadir, where we will have dinner and spend the night.
Today, after breakfast, we explore the endless expanses of the Modrudalsoraefi highland plateau before heading towards Lake Myvatn. On the way, we make a stop (weather and road conditions permitting) at Dettifoss waterfall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe.
We then drive to the Namaskard Pass with its bubbling mud puddles and bright colours. Arriving at Lake Myvatn, we explore the unique, beautiful landscape, including the pseudo-crater at Skutustadir and the salmon river Laxa. Dinner and overnight stay in the Myvatn region.
Optionally, you can book an excursion to the Mývatn Nature Bath.
We have breakfast at the hotel before exploring the unusual lava formations at Dimmuborgir. According to local legends, elves live in the rocks, which look as if they were built by fantasy creatures. We then drove to the Godafoss waterfall, one of the most famous sights in the north of Iceland. The sight of the frozen waterfall was truly breathtaking.
We continued to Akureyri, the capital of the north, where we took a look at the enchanting buildings before traveling along coastal roads to the Troll Peninsula. The road took us along steep mountains and black sand beaches accompanied by incredible views over the Arctic Sea. We stopped in the small town of Siglufjördur in the fjord of the same name, where we visited the famous Herring-Era Maritime Museum.
After the visit, we drive to Skagafjordur, a region famous for breeding Icelandic horses. We had dinner and spent the night in north-west Iceland.
After breakfast today, we will have the opportunity to experience the unique Icelandic horses and their special gait, the tolt. Horses have played a significant role in Icelandic history and remain important today.
Following this, we will drive to the village of Blonduos and cross the Holtavorduheidi plateau, heading towards West Iceland. Along the way, we will pass through Borgarfjordur, a region known for its diverse landscape and Viking heritage. Our overnight stay will be in the Borgarnes region.
Today we visit some of the unique natural sights in West Iceland. After breakfast, we make our way to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in the whole of Europe. We visit the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfall and the nearby Barnafoss waterfall, whose bright blue colour contrasts sharply with the black lava rocks.
We drive through the unique landscape, past snow-covered mountains and the Hvalfjordur fjord to Lake Thingvallavatn, the largest lake in Iceland. The lake is located in Thingvellir National Park in the south-west of the country. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it is home to the Althingi, the oldest parliament in the world. It is also the place where the European and North American tectonic plates meet and you can even walk between the plates.
We then drive back to Reykjavik, where our guide says goodbye to us. Dinner on your responsibility.
With many unique experiences in mind, it's time to say goodbye to the land of fire and ice. A shuttle will take you from the hotel to Keflavik Airport, from where you will start your journey home. Depending on flight times you can spend the morning in Reykjavik or visit the Blue Lagoon on your way to the airport.
