14 Myrdals- jokull Hofs- jokull Langjokull D E N M A R K S T R A I T The South Some of the best known Icelandic sights are in this area including the Strokkur geyser, the geologically and historically interesting Thingvellir area, and the imposing Gullfoss waterfall. Also located here is the famous Eyjafjalla Glacier, which covers the caldera of an ancient volcano. The Westmans are a group of 14 volcanic islands, only one of which only “Heimaey” is inhabited. Several spectacular waterfalls and dramatic sea cliffs are also found along the south shore. The West Fifty-five miles (90 km) long, the spectacular Snaefellsnes Peninsula is often called “Iceland in Miniature” because it boasts many different landscapes from dramatic fjords, snowcapped mountains and sandy beaches to fishing villages, historical sites and waterfalls. Even by Icelandic standards, the region’s wilder- ness areas are incredibly pristine. The deep, narrow fjords are also an excellent place to fish for cod, halibut, wolffish, haddock, saithe and redfish.
